The Corner Newsletter: No Marks Deducted, Bazookas, Shaky Pointillism and a Gem in the Window

CURATOR’S CORNER

Hey! David here again. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome back to The Corner! Each month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on what’s happening at the gallery, along with highlights from the vibrant arts scene in Haliburton County and the big wide world. Whether it’s upcoming exhibitions, local events, or noteworthy trends in the artscape, we’ve got you cornered. I mean, covered.

So, what is Reveal exactly? Well, it’s a live, in-house painting event, where you can watch four of our artists go head-to-head as they each create their own unique interpretation of a surprise image. I’ll be supplying each of them with the same reference image to create from. They won’t be able to peek at each other’s works during the session. Very high-school exam, right?! The good news is that we can all peek. No marks deducted!

And if you think it’s that simple, we’ve never met. I’ve got a curveball up my sleeve that I can’t reveal until we get going on Saturday. Yes, THIS Saturday! 11-3. Don’t be silly. Get here.

Something I can divulge ahead of time is that the paintings will be priced low at the start of the day and will climb as the hours tick by. Think you’re going to love what someone creates? Buy it before they even start at a heck of a discount. Want to see it halfway finished before you decide? Pay more! Completely finished?! Pay the most! It’s like gambling except there’s art at the end of it. Roll those dice before someone else does or miss out entirely.

Thank you to James Brown, Marissa Sweet, Barbara Hart and Holly Hutchison for being the guinea-beauties of this thing.

See you this Saturday. There will be munchies. Stop in to graze and gaze.

Big love, y’all.

unPROMPTed!

I give you a word, you give me a work.

New work, old work, doesn’t matter. Tie it into the word and get included in the newsletter, because I love community.

This month, your word is Rehearsed. Which, unPROMPTed is not. Off the cuff. Let’s see what you create.

Check out last months entries below for the word Capacity.

Capacity: Gaia Orion

Gaia Orion: This little watercolour, called Audacious, goes with a quote from my favourite actor!

I believe in my own ability to manifest things – Jim Carrey

Capacity: Holly Hutchison

Capacity. None.

Capacity: Deborah Reed

Maybe we have more flex in our capacitor than we know. Going into the red is different for everyone. Or it just becomes elastic. Compassion fatigue might become selective. Or tolerance of certain elements in others. Or in self. Or a shift in understanding things, like expanding love for art and ideas and words with people who might challenge one’s former capacity. Or walking further to find more, even if it doesn’t have a face. Or keeping original capacity, that simple one with which you started, and to which you return if you keep your nose clean.

Capacity: Alex Isbister

Here’s David from the Corner Gallery reinstating unPROMPTed with the word Capacity.

What comes up? How do I cap a city? Does it take a bazooka? A cloud of pollution to cap a city? A mushroom cloud? That would do the trick.

What level of audacity would allow a level of rapacity big enough to cap a city?

What is capacity but the fill level of the container I happen to be concerned with at the moment?

So there’s capacity again.

Capacity, rapacity, audacity, opacity, paucity….

Ification. Capacification, rapacification, audacification… Pacification.

Hardly inspired, this romp through a word. But some fun.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH:
JAMES BROWN

No matter how many times I talk about James, I realize that I always start by saying he’s just the nicest guy. Truly. Here I go again. The warmest, kindest, sweetest guy. Look at that smile! While you’re at it, look at that hat! He’s never worn that hat into the gallery, but maybe he will this Saturday when he, painfully, joins in for Reveal. Did he want to? Not at all. Was he too nice to say no? Yes. Obviously.

And hey, he’s a heck of an artist, too. Can’t go without mentioning that.

IN THE HIGHLANDS THIS MONTH

HERE! Corner Gallery: Reveal. This Saturday, August 9th. 11-3. You read about it at the top, so I won’t bore you again. If you skipped that, you missed out. This message self-destructs.

Arts & Labour: Garrett Gilbart: Hosted at Rails End Gallery: Exhibition dates: June 20 – August 28. Arts & Labour brings together Garrett Gilbart’s deep respect for metalwork with a keen awareness of how making has changed in the age of machines.Through his use of found metal objects (in this exhibition car body parts) —a material often associated with strength, permanence, and machinery—Gilbart invites us to think about the value of labour, both past and present. His hand cut motifs resonate with the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which championed the handmade in response to industrialization, and connects to the craft movement across Canada.

Guided Tours of the Sculpture Forest: Every Tuesday in July and August at 10 a.m. you can gather at the kiosk in the Fleming College parking lot and join a guided tour of the forest. Wear comfortable walking shoes or regret not to have. Tours are held rain or shine and can take up to 2 hours. Tours are free but donations are greatly appreciated.

Artist Talks at HSAD: Every Wednesday from 4:45 to 6pm. Get inspired by thought-provoking presentations from instructors, alumni, and guest speakers. Free and open to all, these weekly sessions bring insight into the creative process and contemporary practice. It’s also in the coolest building in the county. So, you know. Just go.

Don’t see your event here? No problem! Email me next time, silly.

WORK OF THE MONTH:

Gem by George Hall

The newest addition to the gallery and to the County itself. Moving here from out West, George brought serious stone-sculpting skill and gorgeousness with him. This photo isn’t doctored. That really is the light reflecting off the work in the front window of the gallery. Come see it for yourself. Around 3:30 – 4:30 is best for the light says the front window.

OUR ART. YOUR HOME.

I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.

Well, that’s where I come in!

I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.

There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.

Respond to this email and let’s chat!

Phil Hansen, a pointillist, developed a shake in his hand. It made him grip his pencil/pen/brush tighter, which worsened the shake, which worsened the grip, which worse…well, you get it. He knew he had to pivot. In this video, he walks you through how he learned not only to live with new limitations, but to open doors he’d never even considered before. It’s a beautiful story, and he tells it perfectly. Watch the video.

GO AHEAD, INSPIRE ME

Not big on confrontation, but this one sounds delightful. What are you confronting? How do you not let it win?
