Hey! David here again. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome back to The Corner! Each month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on what’s happening at the gallery, along with highlights from the vibrant arts scene in Haliburton County and the big wide world. Whether it’s upcoming exhibitions, local events, or noteworthy trends in the artscape, we’ve got you cornered. I mean, covered.
This month, your boy was in the news. TWICE! One time I was standing in front of and mostly blocking a beautiful painting by Rod Prouse (photo right). Sacrilege, I know. You’ll have to come in to see the rest of it. So wait… suddenly this just feels like brilliant marketing. Nice save! We had the reception of the new show The View From Up Here a couple weekends ago, and boy, what a hearty, exuberant, positive and drop-dead-gorgeous turnout. You were there. You already know it’s true. Just look at’cha. This opening essentially marked my first full year here, and I have to say that it’s been incredible to see and feel the growth. The community gets bigger all the time, and nothing makes me happier. Watching you all lift each other up, motivate each other, congratulate, commiserate and hug each other?! Yeah. That’s the best. Thank you all for letting me intervene once in a while with my own congratulations, commiserations and squeezes.
Anyway, this summer will rule. Come by, take a look around, and tell me why it rules for you.

unPROMPTed!
It’s the final countdown, wee nuh neeh nuw, ween nuh nee neeh nuw.
So, we tried, but this wasn’t a successful section of the news letter. If you want to take one last crack at creating something based off our prompt…your word is ‘end’. Dramatic, right? And, as always, I’d really love to see what you do. Seriously. Email it to me! PLEASE!
ARTIST OF THE MONTH: HOLLY HUTCHISON
A new addition to the gallery, but a familiar favourite to the county. Holly is kind, generous, intelligent and an absolute rebel. Visually or otherwise, she’s pushing her own boundaries and inviting the viewer to explore both figurative and literal depths in her textured, abstract works.
Come to a Coffee + Canvas and you will no doubt encounter her there and love her presence.
Mountain Lake at a Glance: The Hidden Nature of Painting opening reception: An exhibit by Toronto artist Gord Peteran on display at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery until July 12, featuring hundreds of Gord’s paintings of his view from his cottage on Mountain Lake. The same view. In different weather, moods, economies, eras. 40 years of painting the same view. SO COOL. Gord will be in the Gallery Saturday, June 14 from 12 – 2 pm. Agnes Jamieson Gallery, 176 Bobcaygeon Rd, Minden. Check him out!
Rob Stimpson at The Space: Photographer Rob Stimpson is pulling you Into the Mystic this month. Award winning and internationally published, this is a collection you will want to see. Heck, you can even meet him June 28th from 2-4pm.
Don’t see your event here? No problem! Email me next time, silly.
WORK OF THE MONTH:
Son by Justine Eva Smith
When I told Justine about the title of the new show, she sent this write up along with the work (wow):
This piece is a narrative about processing the transition of a mother’s perspective, shifting from an aerial view which is constant with a new baby, holding them, or watching over their crib. As years pass and the child grows into their own unique person, the perspective changes. The child climbs to the top of the playground—the parent no longer looks down, but up. This moment carries the recognition that one day, the child will likely grow taller than their mother. So, In essence, this piece is about the exchange—or relinquishing—of “the view from up here” from mother to son.
I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.
Well, that’s where I come in!
I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.
There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.
Respond to this email and let’s chat!
GET CREATIVE!
Hah! Oh, Banksy. You cheeky, cheeky world-renouned-mystery-man (I can’t believe that’s still the case). This piece just sold for $438,000. That’s almost a downpayment on a house these days! Read about it here!
Aurora has sort of blown up in recent years, but nearly 10 years ago she did the most transcendent performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk series. At age 19, it was pretty easy to see that she had something really special. And, let me give some props to the gentleman backing her up. He nails it, too, and that matters, dang it! Drift away.
12-2pm! There’s a seat for you. Maybe. It’s getting pretty crowded. Bring comfortable crocs just in case.
GO AHEAD, INSPIRE ME
Have someone ever said to you “you’re so lucky” about a skill you’ve dedicated your life to?
