The Corner Newsletter: The View From Up Here, Stopping Time, Enemies of Visual Constraints

CURATOR’S CORNER

Hey! David here again. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome back to The Corner! Each month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on what’s happening at the gallery, along with highlights from the vibrant arts scene in Haliburton County and the big wide world. Whether it’s upcoming exhibitions, local events, or noteworthy trends in the artscape, we’ve got you cornered. I mean, covered.

Well, well, well. Spring showed up, eh? I feel like the last noteworthy thing that happened was the ice storm, and now here I am with a sunburn. A year is far too long to remember the reminders, no matter how searing they are.

Big, big news this month, friends. It’s time for a new show here at Corner Gallery. I’m very pumped for this one. No surprise. There are many familiar names and at least a few new ones that you might not yet recognize. All of them absolutely worth checking out.

The subject is The View From Up Here. Some of the interpretations are very, very cool. I can’t wait for the conversations at the opening. Speaking of which…

The grand opening will be on Saturday May 24th from 11am to 2pm. Most of the artists will be in attendance and I will certainly be glad to introduce you.

I hope you enjoy hanging out on The Corner! Feel free to reply and let me know what you think. Or better yet, come on in! I’ll be here!

unPROMPTed!

Let’s see what you creative cats cook up!

In the last newsletter I tried something different with this section. I asked you to interpret one of Rod Prouse’s works in your own style (the one to the right). It was a near complete failure. I only got one entry. Well, message received, everyone! You don’t want your hands tied by visual constraints, and I’m not one to slap them on you! So, from now on, words only.

See? I’m amenable.

This month, let’s try the word Homesick.

I always look so forward to see what your brains do with these prompts, so please email them to me when you’re finished!

Last Month!

Thank you for standing alone last month, Catherine McRae!

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SNUBSTA

At least half of the reason that the gallery exists at all, Snubsta is a crucial player in the game.

Simple at first glance, maybe. The depth of the words that accompany the images force you to bounce back and forth until you’re not sure if it’s really so simple at all.

Check out his book Stillness Allows and try to tell me something in it doesn’t grab you and, at least for a moment, change the way you think.

IN THE HIGHLANDS THIS MONTH

May 16th – 4 – 6pm – Not To Scale opening reception: Hosted at the Rail’s End Gallery. You know the place! Created by students from Stuart Baker Elementary School (SBES), J.D. Hodgson Elementary School (JDH), and Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS), “Not To Scale / Non à l’échelle” is a multidisciplinary, bilingual exhibition that travels across time—past, present, and future. I’m going to check it out, for sure!

May 17th – 1 – 3pm – Mountain Lake at a Glance: The Hidden Nature of Painting opening reception: Hosted at the Agnes Jamieson Gallery. Exhibit by Gord Peteran. What is a mountain lake, exactly? Maybe we can ask him!

May 24th – 11 – 2pm – The View From Up Here opening reception: Hosted at Corner Gallery. It’s going to be a banger. I can’t imagine you would dream of missing it. That would be a nightmare.

Don’t see your event here? No problem! Email me next time, silly.

WORK OF THE MONTH:

This year’s sculpture at the gallery by Jared Tait

How fitting! We’ve had Jared’s paintings in the gallery for the better part of a year, and now, we’re fortunate enough to get one of his beautiful sculptures from The (magnificent) Sculpture Forest crew. Isn’t it gorgeous?!

OUR ART. YOUR HOME.

I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.

Well, that’s where I come in!

I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.

There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.

GET CREATIVE!

A very cool series. Drummers are invited into the studio. They’re played songs that they’ve never heard before…with the real drum tracks removed. They’re free to write what they think the drums could be. On the spot. Yikes. So much pressure! This woman, Domino, has such a great time with it. Her attitude is just as great as her drumming. It’s nice to remember that you can love what you do… Check it out!

This is an oil painting. Yeah. I know. I can’t really stand looking at it, and yet, I can’t look away from it, either. Alex Garant is a Canadian born artist that has owned this style for many years now, and she just keeps refining it. If this doesn’t inspire you to step outside your comfort zone, I don’t know what will! Give it a gander! Get trippy!
