The Corner Newsletter: 14 Minutes, Werewolf in Haliburton, Fragments, Life Time and Designed to Fail

CURATOR’S CORNER

Hey! David here again. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome back to The Corner! Each month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on what’s happening at the gallery, along with highlights from the vibrant arts scene in Haliburton County and the big wide world. Whether it’s upcoming exhibitions, local events, or noteworthy trends in the artscape, we’ve got you cornered. I mean, covered.

So, check this out. I’ve got some personal news to share this month and I’m excited about it. I’m putting out another short, four-song record this week. It’s coming out on Thursday. It’s only 14 minutes and some-odd seconds, so you have time to listen to it, okay? Don’t pretend you can’t find 14 minutes! Listen while you’re driving or folding the laundry or looking for reasons not to get out of bed just yet. I will make one whole penny for every time you listen to the entire record! (yes, the incentives are that bad!)

It’s called Hurt People and my music is under my artist name, Deep Pity.

Yes, it’s sad. I mean, look at the title. Sorry about that. Remember, it doesn’t come out until Thursday, so in the meantime, you can just check out some of my older stuff…and if you don’t like it, then you can skip listening to this one altogether! They’re similar!

Anyway, you can find me on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube if you’d like to. And now, onto the art!

I hope you enjoy hanging out on The Corner! Feel free to reply and let me know what you think. Or better yet, come on in! Tuesday to Thursday from 11 to 5. I’ll be here!

unPROMPTed!

Let’s see what you creative cats cook up!

This month, we’re flipping the script! Making it meta. But not *that* Meta. Yuck. Get off there, and get to work!

Here’s a gorgeous painting by Rod Prouse that currently hangs in the gallery. Let’s get your take on it. Use it only as a gateway to your imagination. What does it evoke in you and how do you respond? (it doesn’t have to look ANYTHING like this painting)

Send it to me! It’s ridiculously exciting to see these things pop up in the email. Check right below to see what came in from last month. They were terrific.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: RENÉE WOLTZ

Look at this sweetheart. Just the kindest and most gentle potter. Unless you’re clay, that is. Then, she smashes you up and pieces you back together however she darn well pleases! But, don’t fret Clay, it’s all for the greater good. There’s unbelievable beauty in her destruction and re-creation.

Renée was one of the first people I was fortunate enough to connect with after I moved to the County. Her work is so proudly displayed in the gallery.

IN THE HIGHLANDS THIS MONTH

The Were’D’Wolf is In: The Space has been hosting our best friends recently, and we couldn’t be more stoked about it. This month, the charismatic, imaginative, super kind giant; The Were’D’Wolf (pronounced Weirdwolf), Jesse Gagnon. He’s working on a comic book. When he talks about it, he spreads his excitement like radioactive ooze, and you can’t help but grow two heads. Visit him. See what he’s up to.

Don’t see your event here? No problem! Email me next time, silly.

PAINTING OF THE MONTH:

Subdued by James Brown

When James dropped this little gem off at the gallery I looked at it for a long while and thought ‘Wow, I love how subdued and muted the colours are’ and then I looked at the title. You got me, James! Beautifully done, sir!

OUR ART. YOUR HOME.

I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.

Well, that’s where I come in!

I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.

There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.

Respond to this email and let’s chat!

GET CREATIVE!

This guy is unbelievable. He’s a freestyle rapper…wait, wait, wait…don’t dismiss him! He goes on a platform where you chat with strangers and has them feed him words to incorporate into his freestyles. They’re immediate, they’re incredible and they’re inspirational. Hear one, here.

Have you ever cried about a machine? You might be about to. This installation by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu gave a robotic machine a simple task that it couldn’t possibly keep up with. Keep the oil from seeping too far outward. Scrape, frantically, forever. And it tried. And it failed. It was designed to. Sounds familiar. I hear you, robot. And yet, I think it’s beautiful. Read more here.

GO AHEAD, INSPIRE ME

I’m changing the name of this section. It’s no longer “From the Socials” because social media has just
been a drain lately (and likely, forever). So, instead, we celebrate inspiration. That’s found everywhere.
Especially when we have the time to look for it. Where do you find it?
