The Corner Newsletter: Unprompted prompt, Exhibition of Mirages, Limitations of Language

CURATOR’S CORNER

Hey! David here again. Thanks for subscribing, and welcome back to The Corner! Each month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on what’s happening at the gallery, along with highlights from the vibrant arts scene in Haliburton County and the big wide world. Whether it’s upcoming exhibitions, local events, or noteworthy trends in the artscape, we’ve got you cornered. I mean, covered.

So, last month I included a photo of myself shovelling the driveway and said that if someone wanted to paint it, I would put it in the gallery. Cheeky, right? Well, Catherine did! Immediately. It was in my inbox mere hours after firing the newsletter out. It now sits proudly displayed on a mini easel at my desk. It is for sale for $23,000, because I’m never letting it go.

This really got me thinking about doing a prompt for any artist that wanted to play along each month. What are your thoughts on that? Do we do a word…or an image…or both?! This month, we’re doing both. I would love to see what our community produces and I don’t like having many rules, so if what you create looks nothing like what I posted, but you think it applies, don’t be afraid to send it. We’re punk like that around here.

Mornings are getting brighter and that blinding white snow is lovely. Not to mention, we’re looking at gaining 70 solid minutes of daytime this month! We’re on the up and up, folks.

I hope you enjoy hanging out on The Corner! Feel free to reply and let me know what you think. Or better yet, come on in! Tuesday to Thursday from 11 to 5. I’ll be here!

unPROMPTed!

Let’s see what you creative cats cook up!

This month, we’re doing a word and an image. So, take your pick! Or, heck, do ’em both!

Make a work, in any medium, based on the image to the right, or based on the word “precarious”.

I’m very pumped to see what you clever devils come up with here.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: HARVEY WALKER

“My goal is to connect to the viewer through painted images that capture the eye and move the spirit. I work with oils and focus on capturing the peace, spirit, and hidden power of ever-changing landscapes.”

IN THE HIGHLANDS THIS MONTH

Dream of Something Wild: A staple at Coffee + Canvas, as well as a true friend of mine, Jennifer Mykolyshyn is doing a residency at The Space. All of February. Tuesday – Saturday, 10 – 5. Collage, painting, light debauchery. There are many nipples, so if those offend you, please steer clear. If that’s not a sales pitch, I’m not a salesman. Go see her. She rules. Read more here.

Rail’s End Annual Members Salon Exhibition – Legacy: So many great artists in this one! Go see them all! Reception this Saturday, February 8th from 1 pm to 3 pm. Be there! Read more here.

February Folk-Fest: Celebrating community spirit…and if you know anything about us here at the gallery, we’re doing the very same, so, bravo Haliburton County Folk Society. Shows happening all month at many different venues. Read more here.

The Land Between – Archie Stouffer Elementary School 2nd Annual Student Exhibition: See some tremendous up and comers from February 13 to March 15. The Artist Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held on February 22 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Read more here.

Don’t see your event here? No problem! Email me next time, silly.

PAINTING OF THE MONTH:

Winter Shadows II by Ian Varney

Is encaustic still classified as a painting? You tell me. And if you don’t know, how do you expect me to?!
Any which way, this encaustic work is a show-stopper. Winter Shadows I is already sold…so…get over here before someone with excellent taste does first.

OUR ART. YOUR HOME.

I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.

Well, that’s where I come in!

I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.

There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.

Respond to this email and let’s chat!

GET CREATIVE!

Sometimes I get wild and paint on a 48″x48″ canvas. Really trying to stretch my arms and my abilities. Never fully satisfied with the work, I stand back and think, hey, at least you tackled a big one! Then, I see this. It’s so unbelievably impressive that it feels like AI…but it ain’t. He does them all over the place, and they’re all unbelievable. See more here.

Imagine seeing an exhibit in the middle of the desert!? It’s breathtaking to see the scale of the work in the photos, I can’t even imagine being there in person. They explored the concept of mirage and oasis (and now, Wonderwall!)…and holy moly, they did it well. Read more here.

FROM THE SOCIALS

Whew! These tones together make my eyes buzz. How fun.
In our Coffee + Canvas group this week we talked about how we experience the world through the
limitations of our language. I think this quote is a wonderful extension of that thought.
