Hey! David here again. Thanks for signing up to hear from us – and welcome back to our newsletter, The Corner. As always, we’ll be here every month, not just with information about what’s happening at the gallery but also what’s happening around Haliburton County and the world of art.
That’s me in the driveway full of joy and exuberance. That, and a sore back. If someone wants to use this photo as a reference for a painting, I’ll hang it in the gallery. No foolin’! It would go perfectly with our current show, Wintershades!
If you haven’t seen the show already, you should really get over here. A bunch of pieces have already left, and a few new ones have shown up in their place. It’s so nice to know that the community has love for the local art gallery even without the booming tourism of the summer months. Thank you for that!
2025 is off to a blazing start over here, and I sure hope it is for all of you, too. Stop in and chat sometime. We need out of the house for more reasons than just clearing the driveway, okay?
I hope you enjoy hanging out on The Corner! Feel free to reply and let me know what you think. Or better yet, come on in! Tuesday to Thursday from 11 to 5. I’ll be here!

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: KELLY WHYTE
Kelly Whyte’s vision is to pursue her passion for painting local landscapes from the Kawartha Lakes and surrounding area. And she’s sure doing it! Her recently built studio, Rapley Fields Art Studio, is where Whyte creates bold, rich and colourful oil paintings that invite the viewer into her story. Walk down a path, follow a creek or gaze at a sunset, the subject matter is familiar and comfortable. Just like spending time with Kelly!
Her painting style leans towards realism but she also enjoys painting colourful, impressionist paintings, with oils being her main medium. She continues to experiment with a variety of mediums and learn from other local artists.
Her main joy is walking, skiing and hiking, while taking copious photographs for her landscape inspirations. You will find Kelly in her studio most days, painting and listening to music.
What the heck is going on in the Highlands this month?! I think we may all be hibernating, and honestly, I’m going to just go grab my blanket and saddle up. If something incredible is going on and I don’t know about it, shame on me! February is a whole new month, though!
In the meantime, here’s something entirely outside of the highlands to consider: *please feel free to email me with your outrage, or calm reasoning why the outrage of others should be quelled* A robot, together with AI, made a “painting” of Alan Turing. It sold for a million dollars. A million. Why not a billion, you know? Same difference. Read about it.
PAINTING OF THE MONTH:
Across the Field by Gord Jones
How is it that a watercolour painting can look so much like a watercolour painting up close…but like the most beautiful photograph when you stand back? Is this common? No. Is Gord Jones a wizard? You ask him!
I know…it’s challenging to find the right piece for your home. What looks great in the gallery might not look so good at home. The colour, the size, the subject matter, the style; it all needs to be taken into account, and that can be a lot.
Well, that’s where I come in!
I’d be delighted to stop by with a selection of paintings for you to look at – as well as ideas about other artworks we have access to that might be perfect. We can discuss what works for you, and why. Think of it like your own personal art shopper.
There’s no obligation to buy anything – and people say I’m very relaxed and friendly. I just love the art that we have here in the gallery and want to share it.

GET CREATIVE!
This is a wild ride. A very honest 14 minute video with one of my favourite current artists. Hilariously titled How to Make the Best Underpainting of a Canvas, he hardly does an underpainting at all, has a meltdown and a recovery in real time and it’s very affecting. That, or I’m crazy. You tell me after you watch it! Watch it here.
When I think of perfect source to get my art news from, CNN immediately springs to mind. Obviously. Well, they nailed it with this one, at least! Art can inspire awe…and awe can make people happy?! You don’t say! Read more here.
FROM THE SOCIALS
I’m very certain that there are incredible artists out there who absolutely KNOW it. And maybe they should.
But, as a someone who doesn’t, boy, this is a relief!
