THE ICE HUT COLLECTION uses the subject of ice huts, but that is not actually what the works are about.

I found myself visiting places in my mind that had nothing to do with the subject, using each image as an
excuse, a jumping off point for the imagination. The settings present a point of view and an angle to
express the personal, the aim being to intensify the viewer’s experience.

In a few I dared to push the boundaries of colour. And in others, I removed as many details as
possible. The initial sketches were mainly views from the car, also, from photos sent by friends, images
which I altered into settings of my own choosing. They have their own character to give free reign to our
emotions. Several are night scenes, serene and evocative. With the exception of “Tangerine Sky” there is
a studied absence of human forms. In this particular painting the figure in the fore ground plays a
secondary role in the meaning of the whole. He is, like the viewer, an observer and we are invited to
complete the story.

THE ICE HUT COLLECTION is a testimony and a record of these unique winter structures, built for
pleasure, sanctuaries on our frozen lakes and rivers. It is my hope that my paintings convey thoughts
private and simple, stolen moments of exquisite solitude and peace.
